Self Regulation Exercises for Preschool Age Kids

The Chocolate challenge is a technique for squirming bodies. The challenge: Place a piece of chocolate, like a Hershey’s Kiss, on your tongue. The challenge is to keep your mouth closed and see how long you can keep the chocolate from melting. You win either way! You either have a calm body or a delicious chocolate! The longer that kids train themselves this way, the longer they can sit for an extended period. The goal isn’t for kids to just sit still; it is for them to realize how to control their ability to be calm or active.

Some tips to try to last longer are:

  1. breathing in through your nose to cool it down
  2. keeping your tongue still (no talking) will help.
  3. Pretend that you are a refrigerator and hum.
